Stauffer Large 15k Solid Gold Swiss Demi Hunter, Mint Pristine Condition
c.1914
|
| |
|
Investment grade Stauffer (IWC forerunner) high grade Swiss flip top
early men's wrist watch in pristine as-new condition. Swiss made hallmark
solid 15Kt solid yellow gold 35mm triple hinged case with wire lugs
is signed CN for Charles Nicolet, who were the early case makers for
IWC. This is not an adapted pocket watch but a factory original very
early purpose made men's wrist or "trench" watch of the highest
quality. The heavy gold hunter case cover has a small window at the
center making it possible to read the time without opening the case
to reveal the dial and giving much more dust, water and damage protection
to the watch. Black enameled Roman Numerals with minutes track are mint
with no enamel loss or damage. Oversized push button onion crown flips
the front cover open to reveal the full porcelain dial with no cracks
or hairlines. Top grade SS & Co (Stauffer) Swiss made gilded pin
set movement that is as crisp and clean as the day it left the factory,
is freshly serviced and winds, sets and runs like new. The back is clean
and free of any dents, scratches or personalization. Inside is a solid
15Kt cuvette with the original owners inscription & is dated 1914.
Both crystals are original and perfect. Fitted with a new Hirsch brown
leather 12mm strap. Made very early in WWI and one of the earliest factory
men's wrist watches, this was a very high quality and expensive item
in it's day. Very rare and beautiful and virtually unworn mint condition.
Interestingly, the inscription is apparently from one lady to another
and the watch was evidently not gifted to a man, although it is definitely
a large sized man's watch. The inscription is very touching and intriguing
and was given for "very loving services" in her "time
of weakness." dated in Edinburgh (Scotland), Feb. 1914.

Civil War Dual Time Zone Military Pocket Watch,
Extremely Rare, c.1860
|
| |
|
This historicaly significant timepiece is the earliest commercially
made military watch we have ever seen. The dial is signed "The
Army's Timekeeper" and features two dials; one for "At
Home" and one for "In Camp." The movement dates
this watch to the 1850's or 1860's and back then there was no
standardized time zones. Every town or county had it's own time
standard. While it may be 6:00 in your home town, 10 miles away
in the next town it may be 6:37 or 7:00. It wasn't until years
later when transcontinental railroad accidents and many deaths
occurred that standardized national time zones were established.
This style of watch without the military dial is commonly called
a "Captain's Watch" and was designed for ship's navigation,
which depended on knowing the accurate time at the prime meridian
and at your present longitude. This particular one was specifically
dialed for Army use during the Civil War.
The large 54mm .935 Swiss hallmarked sterling silver hinged
case with engine turned back shows honest wear but is in excellent
condition. All hinges are in fine condition and there are a
couple of small dimples on the back and bezel. Back is spring
loaded and pops open to 90 degrees when the stem button is depressed
exposing the inner cuvette to allow winding and setting of both
dials (not set by the hands.) Hinged bezel with original glass
crystal. Original untouched white porcelain dial with two time
zones, sub seconds and a sweep seconds hand as well. We have
no idea why it was designed with two seconds hands but they
are original. Dial has small chip at center and a couple of
minor hairlines but looks great and has survived the war and
years of military use in remarkable condition. Inside is the
original Swiss right angle lever escapement bar movement that
is fully jeweled (looks like 15j-17j) that is clean and crisp
and complete but is not running reliably. We are offering this
watch as a Civil War era museum quality artifact which should
never be carried as a watch anyway but a good watchmaker could
put it in proper operating condition if you wish. The watch
was running when we first acquired it years ago but now appears
to have a balance staff issue.

RARE men's 1940's wristwatch with a hinged cover in mint condition
!
Measuring 22mm wide minus the crown and 35mm from lug to lug,
the yellow rolled gold plate case with stainless steel back
has an unusual spring loaded cover to protect the dial and crystal.
Another watch from my personal collection, I bought this watch
many years ago as New Old Stock and have never worn it, only
taking it out of it's box once in awhile to wind it. Any discoloration
on the case and dial is only due to lighting reflection... there's
NO wear on the case and it looks much better when seen in person.
The hands, crystal, and Bertmar signed dial all look great,
the Swiss made manual wind 15 jewel movement winds and sets
smoothly, the leather strap looks like new, and the velvet covered
box is in excellent condition with only a few spots of discoloration
on the brass plated trim.

Benrus Blue Enamel Bezel Engraved White Gold Art Deco Watch, Restored,
c.1930
|
| |
|
Very cool art deco Benrus in white gold from c.1930. Large
reinforced 14k white gold tank style case with fancy engraved
corner lugs with black enamel applied for contrast and a blue
enamel bezel with white gold numerals. This watch was Benrus'
answer to the Bulova Lone Eagle which commemorated Charles Lindburgh,
but with the blue enamel bezel. The case is considered by most
collectors as solid gold even though it is "supported by
metal" which simply means it's mostly gold, as in not plated
or filled. One or two flea bites in the blue enamel are not
noticed without magnification. The hinged snap back case is
in good condition with some tool marks from opening the back
over the years but still in good condition and very serviceable.

hands set. Inside is the original Benrus 15 jewel movement that
